Castle 1 journeyed to near neighbours Nottingham 3 for what turned out
to be a very enjoyable game. Following a shaky start, Castle's defence played
well against 'high' pressure opposition which included man mountain 'Big Al'
(well done Rob: the difference in height was meteoric!). Nottingham finished
the game with only 7 following an injury to 'Tall' Sue, but Castle were not
really able to capitalise. Castle's attack managed to score 8 but it should
have been more - the infamous basket pixies returned to get their own back
following their recent holiday! A special well done to nina making her
C1 debut who played really well in difficult circumstances
C1 = Jon A (3), Phil, Nina, Julia; Rob (3), Steve (2), Mary, Anja

19/3/06: Man Uni I (14), Castle I (7)
Yet another away game with yet another defeat, this time to a resurgent
Man Uni, who were literally playing for their lives. Following 2 wins in their
previous 2 games, one more win for Man uni would take them out of the
automatic relegation zone. Castle were expecting something from the students,
however not the onslaught which happened in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Although Castle did score first thru Jon. but the next thing catle knew
they were 6-1 down. Following some quick exchanges of goals. Castle made it
thru to half time only 9-4 down. In the second half the pace of the game
slowed with goals from Phil, Mary and Jon, but Castle were unable to get over
the hurdle posed by the first half onslaught. The final whistle brought some
cheering from the Students and meant they had almost made the great escape,
condeming Nottingham 4 to CEKL2 next season. This was the first time all
season Man Uni 1 had not been rock bottom and the win raised them to the dizzy
heights of 1 above the bottom.
C1 = Jon A, Phil, Rebecca, Julia; Rob, Steve, Mary, Anja.

Castle 2 Match Reports:
30/10/05: Castle II (4), Keele I (8)
This
game was closer than the score indicates, with Keele I doing the damage in the
second half.
However, there were promising signs for the future.
With two players new to the sport and one new to the club, we strung
some good moves together and put lots of shots up.
Keele I are a good side, but we hope to run them closer in the return
match later in the season.
A special thanks to Adam P for playing up from the thirds
for this game. [Adam G]
C2 = Adam G (3), Adam P, Jana, Anja; Nigel (1), Andy, Nina, Katy
6/11/05: Castle II (8), Keele III (9)
This was a close game played in a competitive spirit. Although Keele 3
led for most of the match, C2 had them on the ropes in a spirited fightback in
the last ten minutes, and count themselves unfortunate not to have taken at
least a point from the game. The game opened at a frenetic pace as the
teams exchanged goals in the first few minutes of the game, with Janna and
Gordon scoring excellent goals. Matt and Adam added two more as defences
started to settle, but we trailed narrowly 5-4 at the break. Keele
scored the next two and just about held onto the lead. Gordon and Andy
(with his first competitive goal) kept the students’ lead pegged back before
goals for Anja and Jana set up a dramatic last few minutes.
Thanks to Dave W for referring, Matt for playing up from the thirds, and Adam
P, Mary, Phil, and Nigel for support. [Adam G]
C2 = Adam G (1), Andy (1), Jana (2), Katy [Nina, h/t]; Matt (1), Gordon
(2), Anja (1), Maz
13/11/05: Stoke II (8) Castle II (8)
For the second game in a row, Castle II rallied strongly late in the game, but
this time it was enough to earn our first point of the season, with a late
penalty from Dave Shaw levelling the scores. Although the seconds were behind
for much of the game, we deserved at least a draw in return for our best
performance of the season so far. The first half started with a brief flurry
of goals, with Gordon, Nigel, and Jana scoring for Castle. We struggled a
little early in the second half and started to fall behind, but runners from
Adam and Jana and a couple of spectacular long shots from Nigel and Andy
clawed us level. A competitive but good natured match turned a little
fractious in the second half as we closed the gap and eventually levelled the
game against some very tough opposition. Although we were behind for most of
the game, we had a few good penalty shouts and a goal controversially
disallowed, and could have won the game. Special mentions to Nina for some
excellent and composed defensive play under pressure, Jana for two excellent
running-in shots (four in two games!), Andy, for his second competitive goal,
and Dave S for having nerves of steel to level the game. Also very pleasing to
see the goals being spread around! [Adam G]
C2 = Adam G (1), Dave S (1), Jana (2), Anja; Maz, Nina, Nigel (2), Gordon (1)
[Andy, h/t (1)]
18/11/05: Keele I (4), Castle II (7)
Castle
2 earned their first win of the season with an excellent performance, building
on Sunday's combative draw with Stoke 2. After falling behind early on, Nigel,
Andy, Katy and Nina laid siege to the Keele basket for much of the first half.
As Keele's defence dropped deep, we peppered the basket
with long shots supported by some dominant collecting that look
suspiciously influenced by the previous Wednesday's training. One attack in
particular saw the ball collected and recycled four or five times. On the
relatively rare occasions that the ball crossed into the other half, Dave,
Gordon,Jana and Anja kept Keele quiet. Goals from Nina (first of the season!)
and Nigel levelled the score at 2-2 at half time.
We looked the stronger side trading goals to 4-4 at the start of the second
half with goals from Anja and Nigel, before goals from Dave S and the
obligatory running-in shot from Jana (who's deadly from under the basket!)
took us to a 6-4 lead. We kept it tight in defence and patient in attack
(perhaps too patient at times), limiting Keele to a few hurried shots while
carving out some good chances ourselves - one of which Andy put away to make
it three goals in as many games.
In fairness this was a weakened Keele I side fielding a couple of relatively
inexperienced players, but that shouldn't detract from an excellent all-round
team performance from C2. We created a lot of chances and made it very tough
for Keele in attack, with Dave S in particular regularly breaking up Keele's
attacks with some timely interceptions and control of the collect. Again, it
was very pleasing to see the goals shared right through the team, though Nigel
deserves a special mention not only for his two goals, but also for his
movement and creativity that kept Keele guessing in defence. [Adam G]
C2 = Nina (1), Katy, Nigel (2), Andy (1); Anja (1), Jana (1), Gordon [Adam
G, 50 mins], Dave S (1).
25/11/05: Keele III (1), Castle II (10)
C2 = Nigel (3), Andy (1), Jana (1), Katy; Jon P (3), Adam, Claire
Pigeon (1), Anja (1)
4/12/05: Castle II (3), Stoke II (9)
C2 = Dave S, Gordon [ Adam, h/t], Jana, Nina; Nigel (3), Andy,
Katy, Maz.
5/2/06: Manchester III (4) Castle II (3)
A tough, close game, with Castle II coming back from an early 2 goal
deficit with 2 goals from Dave. 2-2 at the break, then 3-2 to Manchester
before Steve equalised the score again. Manchester's fourth was a
penalty, and despite a number of good chances we couldn't pull back again.
Special mentions to Claire P and Steve for guesting for us, Dave W for
two excellent goals, and Nina for playing on despite a knee injury. [Adam G]
C2 = Maz, Katy, Steve (1), Nigel; Nina, Claire P, Dave (2), Adam
12/2/06: Man Uni 1 (5) Castle II (8)
C2 got off to a good start in this one, following some good team play from
Adam G, Dave, Nina and Claire. Things were good at the other end too, until
Katy twisted her knee just before half time. Nigel, Mary, and Adam P did a
magnificent job on a division of three to make things hard for the students. [Adam G]
C2 = Nina (1), Claire P, Dave (2), Adam G (2); Mary (1), Katy, Adam P,
Nigel (2)
19/2/06: B'ham City 1 (24) Castle II (0)
Pants - a game notable only for my misbehaviour, and some talented
opposition [Nigel]
C2 = Claire P, Matt, Nigel; Gill, Maz, Adam G, Adam P.
26/2/06: Stoke Spitfires 1 (22) Castle II (2)
A much better game, but only a slight improvement on the score line. Thanks to
Chloe for an excellent second team debut, and to Mary for playing down from
the firsts
C2 = Adam G, Dave (2), Nina, Chloe; Adam P, Nigel, Claire P, Mary
5/3/06: Castle II (3), Stoke Spitfires 1 (15)
A better performance and a (slightly) closer scoreline. Thanks to
Mary and Anja for playing down, and Adam P for playing up. And thanks to
everyone who's played for C2 over the last three weeks - probably our three
toughest fixtures of the season in successive weeks.
C2 = Nina, Claire P, Dave (1), Adam G; Mary, Anja, Nigel (2), Adam P

Castle 3 Match Reports:
23/10/05: B'ham City (22), Castle III (1) (Baptism of
Fire Part II, by Mike)
City are a young and athletic squad, and quickly established a dominant score
line. We defended doggedly but couldn’t stem the tide, and the pressure
began to show with some hasty passes and few shots at goal. I’m not sure of
the half time score but would guess at around 13-0. At half time we decided
that possession was what we lacked, and from the whistle we managed to hold
the ball better and even got some chances. Jana scored a beautifully simple
running-in shot to massive applause. City’s ability to intercept and to
score from long distances still kept us on the back foot, but at least towards
the end their goal rate declined. Phew – we limped back to the team bus!
Thanks go to Dave W and Jana for making up the eight, and pats on the back all
round for resolute resistance against a good team.
C3 = Mike, Jana (1), Dave W, Gill R, Colin, Chloe, Katy,
Adam P?
28/10/05: Keele II (4), Castle III (1)
This match was played in good spirit by both teams. Keele scored first
after a concerted attack: a close range shot. Castle rallied and supported
well, and this good play produced a well-deserved goal – a long shot from
Colin. Castle continued in this vein, but Keele made more chances and scored
with some of them. In the final few minutes we were awarded a penalty, but
missed. But overall though a very encouraging performance with some good team
play. [Mike]
13/11/05: Stoke I (19), Castle III (1)
This
was always going to be a tough game and so it proved. Stoke showed an ability
to score from all positions and a shower of goals produced a half-time score
of 1-11 (to them). This is not to say that we played badly – in fact there
were some passages of really good play particularly in the second half. We
looked lively and supported well. Matt came close to scoring from long range.
Thanks to Jon A and to Jana for making up the team (and to Dave W who came on
for Jon at half-time), to Adam G, Julia and Mary for touch-line support,
and Nigel for refereeing.
[Mike]
C3 = Jana, Chloe, Jon A (1) [Dave W at half-time],
Adam P, Claire P, Lyn, Matt, Colin
20/11/05: Castle III (3), Keele II (7)
We
got off to an excellent start with 3 quick goals (Adam, Mike, Katy) and some
positive play. They were worried. They came back at us and scored 2 by
half-time. From then on not so good, although we still played well, had plenty
of possession, and a reasonable number of shots at goal. Melisa and Marijana
both came on during the game for their first competitive matches, despite not
feeling 100%. Thanks to Katy for helping out in the early stages and to Katy
and Dave W for shouting “Party” from the sidelines. [Mike]
C3 = Chloe, Katy (1) [then Marianna, then Melissa], Mike (1),
Adam P (1); Claire P, Lyn, Matt, Colin.
27/11/05: Castle III (0), Birmingham City (17)
A
scoreline that does little justice to some great defensive play by Castle,
particularly in the first half. In fact, this game started with 15 minutes of
gridlock, with Castle's defense blocking everything apart from hopeful
long-shots. But then the hopeful long-shots started to turn into real
scoring opportunities, and eventually they started to go in... by half time,
though, the score was only 5-0, and Castle could justifiably feel proud of
their defense. It was time to start attacking a bit more now... the one flaw
in this plan was to forget about Birmingham being a very fit and fast squad.
Birmingham switched their plan of attack in the second half too, and they had
much more success once they'd switched to running in shots (and eventually
veering, once our defense ran out of steam). The plan to get more shots in was
working OK for Castle though. Mike had several long shots go close, and
Gordon, Jana and Melissa did well to get several running in shots in against
a very tight and physical B'ham defence (physical in the sense of
hand-slapping, rather than bulldozing - B'ham also had very long arms, and
were very quick on their feet, leading to a real challenge for our passing
skills). All of our team deserve major credit for their performances though.
Martin and Melissa did particularly well against their much more experienced
opposition; Matt, Mike, Maz and Gordon put in pivotal performances, with some
very good ball handling, Jana made loads of opportunities (but we could never
get the ball to her early enough to beat the opposition), and Julia and Mary
helped cover in defense for one half each. Thanks to Steve for refereeing,
Colin for being the un-used sub, and the rest of the clan for touchline
support. [Nigel]
C3 = Melissa, Julia [Mary, h/t ], Gordon, Matt; Jana, Maz, Mike, Martin.
4/12/05: Stoke 1 (21) v Castle 3 (4)
We got off to a good start and had Stoke worried at first, but eventually
they started scoring, and by half-time it was about 7-2 to them. Castle played
in good spirit and looked like scoring, with Mary and Nigel doing just that
from long shots. Stoke have some tall players (both sexes) and were
intercepting and counterattacking very well, and we suffered from this, but at
the same time they didn’t have it all their own way. Mary, combining well
with Adam, got into feeds and Mike got a penalty from a running in shot (and
missed!). At the other end Nigel, Matt, Jana and Lyn made some good passes,
resulting in a running-in shot and goal for Jana. OK, at the end they pulled
away, but it was an enjoyable game and although the winner was not in doubt we
put up a good defence with flashes of good attacking play. [Mike]
C3 = Mike, Adam P, Mary (1), Gill, Nigel (2), Matt, Lyn,
Jana (1).
31/1/06: Stoke 2 (14) v Castle 3 (5)
C3 = Mike(2), Adam P(1), Katy, Gill, Dave W (1), Martin (1), Lyn,
Claire P.
5/2/06: Castle 3 (12?) v Keele 3 (5?)
C3 = Mary, Gill, Nigel, Adam P; Katy, Lyn, Dave W, Jon H. Ref =
Rob.
12/2/06: Man Uni 2 (6) v Castle 3 (9)
C3 = Rob
(), Adam P (), Katy [Mary, 40mins], Gill, Matt [Dave W,
h/t ()], Colin (), Nina (),
Claire P (1).
12/3/06: Castle II (3), Manchester IV (5)
A fun game, with some good performances all-round. Good goals for Colin and
Claire, a well taken penalty for Adam P, an ever-so-close-to-going-in shot
from Gill, and an excellent first game for Andy (including a disallowed goal,
which almost counts in my book). Thanks to Mary, Nigel and Anja for playing
down, to Rob for reffing, and to Manchester for making this a really nice
gameto play in.
C3 = Claire P(1), Andy, Colin (1), Anja; Mary, Gill, Nigel, Adam P (1).
17/3/06: Keele III (6), Castle III (7)
What an excellent game... Castle 3 matched Keele well throughout a
well-tempered game, and came back from 5-2 down to snatch the game 7-6. Some
excellent first half play by Jana, Gill and Matt in particular, followed up by
loads of second half goals (including one for Colin, even though it was a
disallowed one).
C3 = Adam P, Matt [Nigel, h/t (1)], Mary(2), Claire P(1); Colin, Adam G,
Jana(3) and Gill.
