Two Castle teams, both alike in dignity,
In fair Kidsgrove, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
What a brilliant match – just brilliant. Castle 5 played out of their skins for the entire match, and held Castle 4 at bay right up until the end… when Sally-Ann delivered the killer blow. Castle 5 took the initiative right from the start, with great attacking play from Adam P and Mary (standing in for C5 from C3 for the first half) in particular. Mary put C5 1-0 up after breaking off from the post, and Adam went close three times in succession. It took 10 whole minutes before C4 equalized with a great running-in from Steve P.
One minute later and C5 were back in the lead though, with Matt scoring a well-deserved running in shot (his first goal in competition). This was followed by a memorable quote from Dave Shaw, calling a time-out to announce to his team that C4 were now ‘very worried’. It is possibly just as well that he didn’t tell C4 that, as the game was starting to develop an air of tension. That tension finally broke with about three minutes to go to half time, when C4 got their act together and put in three goals in quick succession: Angie got them on the way with a great goal, before Steve P barged his way right through a very bemused Alison, earning himself a penalty on the way! Amy followed up with C4’s fourth goal, dropping-off from the collect after Dave W’s well worked running-in shot. C5 kept themselves in the game when Alison finally got herself on the score sheet just before the whistle to make the half-time score C5 three, C4 four.
The second half was a nail-biting affair: Gordon put C4 5-3 up within a minute of the start; Adam P made it 5-4, a penalty from Steve (6-4) was quickly cancelled out by Dave Shaw’s excellent long shot (6-5) before C5 equalized with just two minutes left to play (Dave slotting in a nice goal from Alison’s free pass). And then the confusion set in… C4 started attacking their own goal, and were well on the way to scoring (relatively unimpeded by C5’s stunned attack!) before realizing their mistake. And then came that killer blow I mentioned… what can I say? I do believe that the entire C5 squad jumped with joy – they really deserved their reward, and could well go on to challenge anyone in the second half of the season. Everyone, on both sides, had played really well and most, if not all, had lived to fight another day. Special thanks once again to Alan for refereeing and Nigel for taking the pictures.
In the interests of balance, it should be said that the 4ths got their revenge with a 10 - 3 win in the return game....
